Introduction To Kayak Trout Fishing
Have you been considering purchasing a kayak for fishing? Do you own a paddle kayak, but are curious about upgrading to a pedal drive? Or, have you just been watching the F.H.S Team fish from our kayak for awhile and want to give it a shot? If the answer to any of these questions is yes…
F.H.S. Kayak Instructional Trips Are For You!
Starting this spring, The Cal Kellogg School of Fishing is offering guided KAYAK trips at Sugar Pine Lake. Sugar Pine Reservoir is a small lake in Placer County, California, located approximately 7 miles north of Foresthill. It is a perfect location to spend a day on the water chasing rainbow trout from the kayaks. Like all the School of Fishing trips, this is not your typical guided fishing trip experience. We will introduce you to
Each daily trip will begin with a simple orientation on dry land before we head onto the water. We will cover the basic equipment, operation, and safety aspects of the kayaks before fitting you with a kayaking PFD and hip waders.
Once on the water, you will learn to pedal, steer, and maneuver the kayak and get comfortable in the seat before we put lines in the water.
Let The Fishing Begin!
Once everyone is feeling good with the basics, the day will be spent trolling and bait fishing for trout. We will have an opportunity to cover Cal’s proven trout fishing methods tailored specifically for kayak fishing.
Ca will walk you through every aspect of trout fishing from selecting lures, color, depth, speed, and reading conditions, thru hooking, retrieving, and netting your fish.
Each angler will spend the day on a new Hobie Lynx kayak. All the gear, tackle, tips, tactics, fun, and laughs are included in your trip.
Our goal is to provide you the opportunity to try kayak angling in a controlled environment with top notch equipment under the supervision of a seasoned and knowledgeable kayak guide. There’s also a really good chance you will hook some trout as well!
Details, Details, Details…
The stability of the Hobie Mirage Drive kayaks is stellar, and this is a great opportunity to experience it firsthand. However, it is on the water, and things do happen, so we require that all participants know how to swim and tread water comfortably. Keep in mind that Cal is in the kayak for hours a day, multiple days a week with Lucy the Labrador at his side. The risk of actually falling out of the kayak is very low.
There is a misconceived notion that kayaking is very tiresome and hard work. Honestly, pedaling the kayak is less tiresome than walking, but it does require some physical stamina. We ask that all participants come prepared to exert some energy throughout the day.
We will provide all the gear you will need on the trip. There is no reason to bring your own tackle or rods. We have you covered!
Our kayak fleet includes Hobie Lynx kayaks. All are equipped with Mirage Drive 180 pedal drives. You will have an opportunity to test first-hand their stability, maneuverability, speed, and fishability of these amazing fishing machines.
In order to ensure your safety and maximize your time on the water, these trips are limited to two (2) clients a day.
The trips begin early in the morning and are about 6 hours in duration. You’ll want to bring lunch, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen and wear layered clothing.
